Brisbane's cultural precinct

The South Bank, on the south bank of the river flowing through the city, is the cultural and entertainment precinct of Brisbane. It is home to the Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Queensland Museum and State Library of Queensland.

World-renowned institutions they are not, but they do provide good cultural entertainment for residents and visitors. We went there yesterday, primarily to visit the newly opened Gallery of Modern Art.

What perhaps separate the Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art from similar institutions elsewhere is that they cater very much for the kids. Large parts of the galleries are actually art playgrounds for the young and the young-at-heart (as seen in the second photograph below). I find this idea quite interesting and reasonable, since art should not be treated as something just for the mature and sophisticated.

After that, we went to the other side of the river to the Roma Street Parkland, a subtropical garden just a short walk from the CBD.
