Bewleys' Oriental Cafes of Dublin are to close by the end of this month.
Generations of Dubliners regarded the spacious and comfortable surroundings as a home from home, sampling the legendary coffee and sticky buns at marble tables and cosy booths. James Joyce stopped for coffee in Bewley's in Grafton Street and the playwright Brendan Behan supped tea while waiting for the pubs to open.
When we visited Dublin in March this year, we went to Bewley's on Grafton Street for an afternoon coffee (I drink about 5 cups each year). Well, the place is really something, but the special coffee (which name I have already forgotten) recommended by the helpful waiter was so sweet that I almost fainted.
