The lower town (Citta Bassa) is the modern part of the city, while the upper town (Citta Alta) is the old, walled hilltop town where most tourists go to.At the heart of the old town is Piazza Vecchia. Sights include Palazzo della Ragione, Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore and Cappella Colleoni.
Even higher up, and reachable by a second funicular, is San Vigilio, a small hilltop settlement which offers several pleasant and panoramic strolls. The main attraction is the Castello, a grassy ruined fortress with superb views to the mountains.

From Milan to Bergamo
Trains run at least once an hour from either Milano Centrale or Milano Porta Garibaldi to Bergamo.
The trip takes an hour or less, depending on whether there are stops or changes.
Single journey ticket costs around 4 Euros.
Milano Centrale or Milano Porta Garibaldi are close to each other and connected by Metro.
The road connecting Milan and Bergamo can be very congested.
To Citta Alta
Take bus #1 or #1A from the train station to the funicular station at the foot of the hill, and make the free ascent to Citta Alta.
Bus #1A continues on to Citta Alta.
