The new year has started brilliantly as far as my film enjoyment is concerned. Almodovar returned to top form in Volver (I nominated his Bad Education as one of my top three viewing disappointments in 2006). Meanwhile, Inarritu scaled new heights in Babel. As I wrote earlier, if there is such a thing as a "Kieslowskian" director in the younger generation, it would have to be Inarritu. And Babel has lent support to my argument.
