Laptops 'used to cheat'

THE University of Queensland is investigating allegations that postgraduate students cheated in a crucial exam last year by using laptop computers to communicate with outsiders.

Passing the Chinese language course means students received accreditation by the National Accreditation Authority for translators and Interpreters.

For overseas students, who pay about $10,000 a semester for the three-semester course, this boosts their chances of being allowed to remain permanently in Australia.

"It was open-book, they are encouraged to use computers and dictionaries but they have to do the work themselves,"

"Some students are alleged to have used wireless communication software during the exam to contact other people."
