張曼娟：如果我要跟學生推薦讓他們開始讀張愛玲的話，我通常都是推薦「傾城之戀」。
蔡康永：妳的學生是中文系的學生？
張：對！當然是中文系的。
蔡：大一...就是大學一年級、十八歲才第一次讀張愛玲嗎？
張：百分之九十都是第一次讀張愛玲。
蔡：那他們大學之前在讀什麼？
張：網路小說吧！我想，或是漫畫。
蔡：所以妳如果課堂上不講張愛玲，他們就不看了嗎？
張：我想是終生都不會看吧！(蔡：真的假的？)你很震撼嗎？
蔡：我很震撼。為什麼？
張：不需要啊！有什麼需要呢？你讀張愛玲有什麼必要呢？海明威有什麼需要呢？所以也不會讀海明威。我們今天討論唸中文系幹什麼嗎？
蔡：我很緊張啊~~就是他們到大一才唸張愛玲，會唸中文系表示他們其實對於中國文學是很有興趣的吧...
張：對！但是可能現代文學還沒有進入他們所謂中國文學的這個範圍裡面吧。現代文學的方面，他們其實接觸的還是比較少。
